In 2008, 2009 and 2010 Smith was artist-in-residence at a meditation centre near Kandy, Sri Lanka. She spent a number of weeks each year in the hills as a stimulus – to awaken thoughts and allow time for reflection, to find space within the thoughts, to walk a different landscape. This culminated in a solo exhibition in Galle in 2010 and several large scale sculpture commissions in Sri Lanka.

Smith was invited in 2012 to Sweden to complete a residency near Gothenberg using their local granite. This project was supported by Chrysalis Arts and Arts Council as part of its “Connection North Programme”. In 2013 Smith was successful in her application for funding from the Arts Council International Developement Fund to return to Sweden to complete a large scale sculpture and to create links and opportunities for joint collaboration with other sculptors in Northern Europe.

Smith had the exciting opportunity in 2013 to be artist in residence in the Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda. She was successful in her application to the Ruwenzori Sculpture Foundation, a registered charity set up in 2004 by the directors of Pangolin Editions and Parabola Land Ltd with the aim of enabling cultural and education exchange between artists in Africa and the UK. By taking established European sculptors to work with Ugandan artists the foundation hopes to encourage dynamic and exciting new work.
